Web Design Tip:  Start With A Domain Name

Every web site needs a domain name.  There are two far ends of the domain name spectrum which you need to decide where you will sit in between.  One end has not well known, or even worse, made up words.  The other end has common words found in the dictionary which are in use in everybody’s day to day lives.   Say your company sells insurance and its name is the McCorey and Franklin Agency.  You could legitimately get the domain name McCoreyAndFranklinAgency.com but if no one knows your name, then how will they know to type it into a web browser or search engine?  If the goal is to get new business from people that don’t know you, then you are better off getting a domain name like MarathonInsuranceQuotes.com because people will search for “insurance quotes” in the city of Marathon and Google will see this and make your listing more likely to show for this person’s search.

Web Design Tip: Who Says You Can Only Have One Web Site?

Using the previous example, say we made the main company web site MarathonInsuranceQuotes.com.  However when people search for insurance quotes, they will look for something more specific like “Marathon car insurance quotes” or they will search for “car insurance quotes” and Google will determine their location to be in Marathon.  So even though the Agency writes life, health, home, and auto insurance, in addition to MarathonInsuranceQuotes.com I may want to also create MarathonCarInsuranceQuotes.com and not mention anything on that site about life, health, or home.  Why?  Because Google really likes web sites very specific to what a user searches.  The more specific the site and pages to a particular topic, the closer to the top of Google it will rise when a person performs a search on those keywords.

Web Design Tip:  Use a Content Management System (CMS)

We too often hear customers complain about their old web guys and how long it took to update their web site.  In effect, these guys are holding customers hostage. We always insist that our customers use a Content Management System (CMS) such as WebSite Baker, WordPress, or Joomla. The main benefits are faster building of the web site and empowering the customer to be able to make their own changes to the web site at their leisure.  If you can use Microsoft Word, then you can edit and update your web site at your leisure when you use Florida Keys Web Design.
